Post-Museum is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Arnewaty, the result of our two-month local artist residency programme.

Beyond Realm – The ‘Pelagic’ Series will showcase paintings, which contain the behaviour of environmental characteristics found in the pelagic zone. With reference from observing weather changes and studying thermocline environment, Arnewaty created mysterious spaces, which serves and aims to evoke organic phenomenon in her paintings.

Arnewaty perceived organic phenomenon as an enigma in pelagic landscape, which can be understood as a realm between tangible and the real. It is a realm that embodies unclassified mysteries and registers the tyranny of logics. Audience will discover familiar forms, which could relate to the thermocline environment and yet at the same time, might discover peculiarities about the ‘landscape’ in the paintings. She uses brush marks as means to consider the ‘nature of reality’ and believes that the approach of ‘free forming’ brush marks and creating accidental spaces in paintings can form imagery representations.

Beyond Realm – The Pelagic Series’ paintings are characterized by free-flowing lines, which provides a sense of movement and rhythm. Distances created in between gestural brush marks varied in between each other, resulted into rhythmatic movement. Diffusion of brush marks can caused irregularity, thus the structure of the composition gradually shifted from being ‘fine to coarse' and from sparsely to highly saturated, causing variety in space and depth. Colour defines the composition among the rendered brush marks and performs as an agent to evoke organic phenomenon in the paintings. Arnewaty hopes to create an abyss of space that can engage and conjure imagery visualizations into the audience visual experience.

Arnewaty is a graduate from LASALLE College of the Arts (Open University Programme) in 2008. She had completed her Bachelor of Arts (Painting) and was a recipient of The Goh Chok Tong Youth Promise Award in 2007 and Winston Oh Travelogue Award in 2006. She has participated in several exhibitions such as Singapore Art Exhibition (Under Open Section), Singapore Contemporary Young Artists Exhibition and Wrestling [a travel exhibition at Taksu Singapore and Malaysia], Rhythm and Groove with ARTSINGAPORE'07 @ Ministry of Sound, Fibre and Form at Eagles Eye Art Gallery and 1 x 1 x 1 Exhibition at Fost Gallery.

Biography
Ezzam Rahman holds a Diploma in Fine Art Sculpture from LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, but has since expanded his practice to include other disciplines, such as installation art, and performance. His works, though varied in medium and presentation, deal with notions of the self, driven by aspects of love, joy, loneliness, deceit, and loss.

In addition to receiving the National Arts Council Georgette Chen Scholarship in 2002, Ezzam was appointed to represent Singapore at the 1st ASEAN Cultural Week in Cambodia that same year.

Ezzam is also a member of two Singapore-based non-profit arts societies – Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD, Association of Artists of Various Resources), and The Artists Village.

Artist Statement
EZZAM RAHMAN is a practicing artist and an accidental producer graduated from LASALLE SIA College of the Arts, with a Diploma in Fine Arts, Sculpture, 2003. As an artist, he has participated in numerous local and regional group exhibitions / festivals and collaborated with local theatre companies such as The Singapore Repertory Theatre. He is a recipient of the National Arts Council, Georgette Chen Scholarship Award, 2002 and was appointed to represent Singapore to Cambodia as a visual artist at the 1st ASEAN Cultural Week Festival in the same year. Though Ezzam is trained as a sculptor, he is most comfortable with installation art and performance art. He’s works varies with its choice of medium, concepts and strategies of presentation. Ezzam’s works deals with the notion of self – emotion – sexuality and are inspired by the elements of love, pain, hate, joy, loneliness, lie, death; these are just some of the many elements that create his practice.

He is also a member of two local non – profitable arts societies, APAD; Association of Artists of Various Resources and The Artists Village. Ezzam was also recently appointed to curate the 33rd Annual APAD Exhibition, “Kampong” at The Malay Heritage Centre. His works have been featured and installed at CK Tangs, Bang and Olufsen and Raffles City Shopping Centre. His past performance pieces includes “The little Bird” series at the grand opening of ArtyFakt Gallery 2005, Episode 5 2006 and Fetter Field 2006/07. He recently went to Jogjakarta, Indonesia for a performance art festival, “Chaos Dab!”

His past collaboration video works includes “Demam Jantan; All for a guy” that was showed in Thailand “3rd First Frame Festival” and Indonesia “4th Q! Film Festival”, “Miss_Take”, “Adam Up There”, “Apa Khabar Orang Kampung”, the quirky “Forgotten Merlion”, the ever controversial short film ‘Ruber’ where he co-directed it. Ezzam was also selected as one of the directors for the MDA Panasonic Digital Film Fiesta 2006 under the selected Open Category where he acted, directed and produced “Reflections of Insanity”.

Good day to all,

I am a NAFA student with a research assignment at hand currently and the area of interest is in utmost relation to the practitioners of all the various disciplines that could be found here.

In view of all your achievements and experience in the contemporary arts arena, I thought that your feedback in this humble survey would be instrumental in assisting me to complete my research with the utmost encouragement. It is a SHORT survey in relation to an ideal studio space for an artist. Please consider. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Jacklyn's reply to Calvin's Questions

ð       Storage for artworks and materials - Storage for artworks and materials is and has always been a challenge for all artists working in any form of material. Ideally, a 1000sq ft x 1000sq ft space is sufficient for an artist to be able to store their materials and work in the given space.

ð       Natural Lighting - Lighting is subjective to the kind of work you produce. Natural lighting is best for alot of painting, photography, architectural works etc but if a performance artist uses natural lighting for his/her performance, then I would think a choice of a studio space that offers as much natural lighting is top choice.

ð       Location of studio space - Some artists prefer having a studio located in the busy city, some prefer a tranquil environment. It depends on what and how your environment inspires you and your own personality to adapt this these environment.

ð       Availability of art supplies near studio premises - If buying from Art Friend for every project you do is your choice to make an artwork, then I think you will remain as an undeveloped artist for some time. Materials can be anything to an artist, not necessary conventional materials alocated for art-making usage. Some artists work with sticky tape and sticky tape is easily bought at almost any bookshop, some artists work with lighting and may need to contact overseas or local suppliers for their needs. It is not necessary for art supplies to be near your studio.

ð       Which level the studio is located - Level of studio located is an interesting feature to consider. Again, if you are a sculptor, ceramicist, installation artist or painter, it is of cos best that you find a studio on the ground level for easy mobility and transportation. These artists tend to work in large size works that demand a large amount of space. If you are a performance artist, digital media artist, you will not be affected by level of studio.

ð       Vehicular access - Alot of artists' studio these days are located far into the industrial part of Singapore. Singapore is a small enough island for accessible transportation.

ð       Good ventilation - Upmost importance if you work in conventional art materials.

ð       Individual partitioned spaces - Not neccessary at all. Boxing up a professional artists studio will only create more distance and friction from your studio mates. The reason why you would share a space with your studio mates is to create opportunities for collaboration and critical elevuation of everyone's artwork.

ð       A bookshelf for your library of research books/notes - This is optional. Some people like to keep their books on shelves, some in boxes, some on the table, some laying it around. Whatever your choice is to make space for your research notes, do-it-yourself.

ð       Comfortable nook for resting and coffee-breaks - Shouldn't your studio space already be a nook for resting and coffee breaks?

ð       Type of people sharing your studio space - Artists working in different mediums can share in the same studio space, not necessary to have an elitist all-painter studio etc. This creates more interesting inspirations. The type of people sharing your studio space should be able to compromise on all rules and regulations that is necessary for the functioning of the studio.

Profile
Farhan ‘Azrafael’ Razak is a Singaporean who grew up in the island state and shares a close relationship with the ever changing times and records the present as seen through the lens conveyed with his thoughts.

His conviction to keep his photography unique in its form probably lets his viewers over the years identify it as his signature style.

Unlike most photographer artists, his technical skills were derived from self-taught sessions online and through discussions with other fellow enthusiasts.

What started out as a hobby as a child, began as a pursuit to express through a medium he can control only in its functions but not of the random scenes just as how he utilizes the body in a world of random actions beyond his control.

Artist Statement
Ranging from architectural facades, street scenes, conceptual and sometimes the surreal has made my works are synonymous to my tag line ‘Flâneur Fotografi’; which basically means aimless photography with each shot is in its own splendor.

Photography is something that I truly enjoy performing as an art form and also as a hobby. I abstain from the digital methodologies other than the scanning of the processed film for the online showcase as I dwell more on the classic art form of film photography aesthetics.

Photography is a tool I began using to voice out thoughts through images captured in spontaneous actions. Street scenes were a common sight mostly depicting people and lifeless objects and surroundings with contrasting themes.

Conveying thoughts through images with words of short and concise relative themes were the ingredients of my creativity and such methodology weren’t always well received by the general public as they are used to ‘eye-candy’ photographs.

I want to invoke the viewer with my works, to be free from inhibitions as they look through the imagery. Be filled with senses and to question themselves.

Creative redundancy is a waste of a thinking mind.

Providing Web Design Solutions At Reduced Fee

As an added contribution to the SCYA project, Adib who designed the current SCYA website is offering to assist in designing/redesigning the websites of young emerging art talents.

He believes that a well-designed website will deliver a clearer message to the online audience and enhance the accessibility of the artist, on top of complementing the artist's work.

Adib is offering to work closely with each artist to produce a custom-designed website (not one of those generic templates) at a reduced fee as a show of his support to these emerging talents.

Biography
Farizwan, a.k.a. SpeakCryptic, makes work based on his ideas of the human condition and reactions towards self-censorship.

His recent works focus more on image making as opposed to his earlier works that dealt with semiotics and the topic of text versus the image. Having been in an art school for three years and conceptualizing his way to a Degree in Fine Arts, his latest offerings feature an ongoing process to simply create an image that can be both visually stimulating and at the same time thought provoking. There is an emphasis on the viewer's ability to find a relationship between the image and the text. With this in mind, he hopes that the viewer will question his or her own ideas of perception, and would be more aware of him or herself.

"I've learnt many things while I was in art school and a huge part of that time was spent on conceptual art and art history. This is all well and good, but I never really had the chance to just let go and draw. My works are still dealing with the same things as before. I'm still interested in the human condition and social politics but I figured that it's about time I approach it in a different way."

Speakcryptic has done work for various friends and establishments, including the Singapore Art Museum, Straits Records, the Red Dot Design Museum, and New Man Magazine. Speakcryptic is also a part of the two-man design collective, Ghosts On Radar, and likes pasting stickers onto public objects in his spare time.

This was created in the wee hours of the morning. I couldn’t sleep and was just tossing and turning on my bed. I got up, out of frustration, I guess, and took a piece of cardboard and random tubes of paint and began laying down the colours. I don’t remember much about the process, though I remember feeling, shortly before dozing off, like I had just won a war. The next day, I woke up and added the phrase “Battle Scars” onto its neck.

It’s one thing to keep a secret, but it’s another thing when you know that a secret, when told to the whole world, has changed people around you. Relationships are severed and everyone else starts ignoring one another. I know something that only a few others know, and this secret is laid down to rest in this work.

It was such a relief when someone decided to purchase the painting. It’s out of my hands. Out of sight, out of mind.

Founded by Zahir Sanosi in early 2003, “KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET” is the moniker that he adopts for his work, which ranges across multiple platforms involving illustrations and design for various artifacts of popular culture, including t-shirts, skateboards, or any given blank walls.

A creative concept that is based on learnings from life experiences coming mostly from his childhood, Zahir uses his art to bridge personal life, and the inspirations and visions that he wishes to communicate. Not limiting his ink work to any particular surface or medium, Zahir’s artpieces come with each their own story: works that whisper to the audience’s eyes, ears and hearts.

A smell. A touch. A voice.
A favorite activity. A personal object.
Recollecting their actions through inanimate objects is one of the ways we can remind ourselves of people we were close to after separation by death. An object can remind us of their personality in ways that sometimes a photograph misses. It tells stories of how they might have lived, yet adds to the anonymity of that special individual. Using something tangible to remember their presence and illuminating their personal objects in a familiar setting represents how much we treasure the memory of them in our lives even now.

The installation encourages the audience to relate to personal memories while also acting as a tribute to that special someone of the participants.

Bio
Having a keen interest in creating a narrative in her installation works, installation artist Angela Chong’s work deals with light and darkness, constantly blurring the line between fiction and ‘reality’. Her current work depicts memories, and the attachment between an object and its owner using light projections.
Angela now is artist in residence at Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo from Dec. 2008 to Jan. 2009.

Aging Youth Records is putting together our annual flagship event 'Spread The Love' on Sunday 23 November 2008 at the Substation Guinness Theatre.

It will be a fundraiser in aid of the Asian Women's Welfare Association (AWWA) Early Years Centre. All proceeds will go to fund the Centre's educational programmes.

The AWWA Early Years Centre offers early intervention programmes and individual therapy consultations for infants and young children under 5 with special needs.

Early intervention means a support system of special intervention and therapy services for infants or children. He or she will participate in small group activities to promote interaction skills. In addition, the child may receive individual attention from a therapist to encourage specific skill development.

Figure drawing is a common practice among many an artist and art student, especially in the studios of art academies. Some have also carried on the tradition even after having passed the phase of academic requirements, as they enter into professional practice. While the nude model takes on various poses, the observer explores this live human figure through a visual interplay of forms, shapes, lines and shadows. Such exercises are usually done behind closed doors.

A Closed Door is a workshop, an invitation to investigate the norms of such a practice. One of the concerns is how an injection of varied musical styles can influence the way we perceive and interpret the naked body. Participating artists are not limited to drawing as their medium of study.

Zai Kuning's statement:

FOI5 is a performance art event. One of my desires is to work with several artists whom I know and have attracted me to their creative impulses. For me, they make up the fibers of our local arts scene. This project also stems from a need to collaborate and communicate with artists whom I have already been acquainted with for several years. One of the ideas is to orchestrate a kind of ‘set up’ where we can exercise the pleasures and discomforts of questioning.

Life drawing came into my mind partly because such an exercise is what most artists have gone through (regardless of whether they like it or not) in an art institution. I think that this venue and event would provide the perfect environment in which we would be free to investigate, document, interpret and express our ideas, making life drawing and performance art the very subjects to be re-examined. This does not imply a return to academia, rather it is a revisitation of the culture of observation, concentration, silence and performativity. Some classes do play CDs as background noise as silence can be intolerable for both artist and model. I find that music inspires them to contemplate another form of silence and for that reason, I intend to play music for the whole session.

This proposal and invitation (to artists and audiences) is not only to challenge the preconceived notions of life drawing, but also to rethink the assumptions and forms of performance art. All participating artists have agreed upon a series of works following the inaugural session on the 13th of November, till we produce something worth being presented in an exhibition sometime next year. I hope that many of you would be drawn to being a witness at this event. To observe those who observe.

Let Me Off!

After being away from the workforce for 10 years, Mrs. Liew makes plans to don her working suit once more and re-enter the corporate world. Holding a full-time job means she would need help to manage her two-storey house, do the dishes, walk the dog and more importantly, to take care of her daughter, Catherine who's in primary school. Enter Ira, the domestic worker from Indonesia.

Ira is happy with the Liew family, and is especially fond of her young charge whom she gradually forges a special bond with. She works hard six days a week and gets Sundays off. One day, Ira is invited to a weekend concert, headlined by her favourite movie superstar. Will Mrs Liew let her go?

Culled from real-life experiences, "Let Me Off!" is a fun-filled interactive theatre piece featuring a talented cast of both Singaporeans and migrant workers from Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal and India. It explores how we interact with migrant workers - especially the ones in our homes. Look forward to dramatic moments and some serious booty shaking. It will also invite members of the audience to participate and interact with the actors on stage.

This production is organized to commemorate International Migrant's Day 2008, in association with Drama Box.It is adapted and extended by Sha Najak and Kok Heng Leun from a script entitled "Let Me Go!" by the Necessary Stage.

About SCYA
Singapore Contemporary Young Artists aims to gather and promote talented young practicing artists whose works show potential for recognition.

The first round of 23 artists selected represent a continuity of their practice as well as work in the art of the time. They could be dealing with pop-culture, identity, religion, history, sexuality, multiculturalism, globalisation, new-media technology, bio-engineering and even AIDS awareness in forms of painting, installation, printmaking, sculptures, drawings, performance art, multimedia formats and text.

SCYA aims to first complete a detailed website containing links and collaborations with various government constituencies, educational institutions and art communities, following after a curated exhibition of promising Young Artists in 2009 and eventually produce a publication in 2010-11 to mark a generation of Singapore’s Contemporary Young Artists.

SCYA projects are currently run by Jacklyn Soo and Sabrina Koh.
